AI sovereignty: why it matters for enterprise deployments
What AI sovereignty means for enterprises running AI agents: data residency, inference location, vendor independence, and how to design for it.

"Sovereign AI" gets used loosely, but for an enterprise it means something concrete: your data and your inference run where you decide, not where your vendor decides.
For a bank or a government ministry, that distinction matters. If your AI platform sends documents to an API in another country for processing, sensitive records or citizens' personal data have crossed a border. Regulators notice.
The three layers
Data residency. Where your data sits at rest. You decide the region and provider: your own infrastructure, a specific cloud region, or a managed service contractually committed to a location.
Inference location. Where the model that processes your data runs. This is often overlooked. If your documents live in-country but inference happens on a model provider's servers abroad, you have solved storage but not processing.
Vendor independence. Whether you can switch vendors without rebuilding. A platform tied to one model provider locks you in. A platform that runs on your infrastructure with models you choose lets you own the relationship.
The strongest designs address all three. The weakest address only one.
Why it matters beyond compliance
Compliance is real, but there are business reasons too.
Continuity. If a vendor changes pricing, availability or licensing, you can move. If your platform depends entirely on one API, you are a price-taker.
Control of your data. Know contractually whether your prompts and documents may be retained or used to train future models, and keep the most sensitive workloads where that question does not arise.
Performance and cost. Inference close to your systems can be faster, and choosing the model per agent lets you match cost to the task.
What an enterprise agent platform should offer
- Configurable deployment. The same release running on your infrastructure, your cloud account, or a managed service you control.
- Model choice per agent. Not locked to one provider's API.
- Clear data terms. Written commitments on retention and training use.
- Transparent data flows. You know exactly what leaves your environment and where it goes.
Where Sigma is today. The platform can run in your environment, while model inference goes to the OpenAI or Anthropic model you choose, and document search uses a managed index. Self-hosted models and a local index are on our roadmap.
